Shanshan Feng grabbed her second major and fifth win of the year Sunday at the Japan Women’s Open.
Feng, 22 of China, completed the wire-to-wire win with a 1-under 71 in the final round to edge In-Bee Park by one shot at Yokohama Country Club to finish at even-par 288.
With her win, Feng jumped back to No. 3 in the Rolex World Rankings and became the first player since 1997 to win majors on both the LPGA and JLPGA in the same year.
“I gained a lot of confidence after I won my first title at last year’s Meiji Cup,” Feng told the Daily Yomiuri in Japan. “I appreciate how much the Japan tour has helped me develop.
Since that first win last year, Feng has really begun to flourish. Earlier this year, she won the LPGA Championship and has won on three tours in 2012.
On the Ladies European Tour, Feng won the World Ladies Championship, added the LPGA Championship on the LPGA Tour and the Yonex Ladies, the Meiji Cup and the Japan Women’s Open Golf Championship on the LPGA Tour of Japan.
“I’m so proud of Shanshan. She’s become one of the best players in the world,” said Gary Gilchrist, who has coached Feng since she was 16. “What she is accomplishing is huge inspiration for junior golfers and for golf in China. Hopefully it continues to help grow the game there.”
Feng often trains with Gilchrist at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy in Howey in the Hills, Fla. where she lives and Gilchrist often travels with the Chinese star to several events throughout the year.
